CRAIG MURPHEY HUMMUS COOKOFF
Got a killer hummus recipe? Two quarts of your hummus can help feed 1.4 million New Yorkers. Here's how.
On Sunday, October 16 at Brooklyn's Public Assembly, we'll be holding our annual Hummus Cookoff Competition at the 5th Annual Craig Murphey Fellowship Fundraiser, benefiting the New York City Coalition Against Hunger (NYCCAH). Awesome kitchen prize packs will be provided by Whisk for the top 3 recipes. So whether you already have a favorite hummus recipe or just want to see how your culinary skills stack up against professional chefs, food bloggers and amateurs, we invite you to enter!
Tasting/judging cards will be sold for $5 (all proceeds going to the fundraiser), allowing partygoers to rate the different hummus entries based on four criteria: taste, texture, originality, and choice of dippable item. Each year the entries get more delicious and more diverse, and we're hoping this year's competition will raise the bar even further.
OFFICIAL RULES / INFO
- The competition will be Sunday, October 16 from 7pm-9pm.
- To register, send an email with your first/last name to hummuscookoff@gmail.com by FRIDAY October 14. If you're representing a restaurant or website, please note that as well.
- Contestants should bring at least 2 quarts of hummus to the event - but more is always welcome.
- Hummus can be made with any type of bean, not just chickpeas... be creative!
- Contestants are also responsible for bringing their own "dippable" items-- bread, pita, carrots, etc. The choice of dippable item will be factored into the voting criteria. We'll have extra in case anyone runs out, though.
- Please stick to vegetarian-friendly ingredients, so everyone can participate in judging.
- NO STORE-BOUGHT HUMMUS. There's really no way to tell, but if you do this you are totally lame.
- Please arrive between 6:30-6:45 to set up your hummus. If you need to show up early or late, or have someone dropping it off for you, just email us to let us know. hummuscookoff@gmail.com
- Please bring any serving utensils such as spoons or spatulas you might want to use. Napkins will be provided.
- Votes will be tallied once tasting ends at 9pm, with winners announced around 9:15.
Proceeds from this annual event, which will also feature a charity raffle, DJs and rock-n-roll karaoke, will benefit the New York City Coalition Against Hunger and will help fund the Craig Murphey Fellowship program. This program continues the outstanding work of Craig Murphey, a young community organizer (and hummus aficionado!) who worked tirelessly to help bring locally grown, nutritious food to low-income New Yorkers. After Craig lost his life in a bicycle accident four years ago, NYCCAH created the fellowship program in his honor to help carry on his legacy of anti-hunger advocacy.
