Proceeds from this free annual event, which will also features a food-celebrity-studded hummus cook- off and rock-n-roll karaoke, will benefit the New York City Coalition Against Hunger (NYCCAH) and will help fund the Craig Murphey Fellowship program. This program continues the outstanding work of Craig Murphey, a young community organizer who worked tirelessly to help bring locally grown, nutritious food to low-income New Yorkers. After Craig lost his life in a bicycle accident four years ago, NYCCAH created the fellowship program in his honor to help carry on his legacy of anti- hunger advocacy.
"The Craig Murphey Fellowship honors Craig's one-of-a kind, fervent commitment to grass- roots organizing that achieves social progress from the ground up," said Joel Berg, NYCCAH's executive director. "Our Craig Murphey Fellow this year aided neighborhood-based projects in 18 states, helping them build their capacity to enable hungry Americans to access federal nutrition assistance programs. There is no question that the Fellow aptly carries on Craig's legacy."
Next year's fellow will re-focus efforts on coordinating with the 1,200 soup kitchens and food pantries in New York City to bring healthy, sustainable food to the 1.4 million New Yorkers living in food-poor households.
Craig worked as hard as he laughed and danced, and it's in this spirit that we've put together a great night of music, laughter and friendship, all for a great cause.
The hummus cook-off competition from 7-9 pm will feature entries from local restaurants, including legendary pizza outpost Roberta's, food bloggers, and amateur chefs. (Contact hummuscookoff@gmail.com if you'd like to submit an entry).
Raffle winners will be announced at 10. Tickets can be purchased in advance at here or at the event. Past prizes have come from a diverse group of local businesses and artists, including the Ace Hotel, bands the Gossip and the Vivian Girls, Dolce Vita Shoes, Brooklyn Brewery, bars Dram and The Drink, art facility 3rd Ward, the Discovery Channel, Cirque Di Soleil, Marie Robinson Salon and The Stanton Social, among others.
We'll also have free karaoke from 10:30-late, donated by The Kings of Karaoke.
Proceeds from drinks courtesy of Reyka Vodka and Brooklyn Brewery will also be donated to the Fellowship.
